Essay / Effects of Drug and Alcohol Abuse on College Students...
For more than two decades, drug abuse among adolescents and youth has become a universal epidemic across the world. According to various case studies, this shows that young people, including adolescents, turn to drugs as a social pleasure and others as an easy solution to their problems. However, many users do not think about the long-term consequences and side effects these substances have on their lives. Substance abuse is defined as excessive use of or dependence on an addictive substance for the purpose of altering mood. Some of the substance abuses I will focus on include alcohol, drugs including marijuana, cocaine, or over-the-counter prescription pills. Based on my research on drug abuse, I expect to find poor academic performance among students who engage in drug use; Besides, my independent variable will be substance abuse, including drugs and alcohol, and my dependent variable will be the decline in academic grades due to indulgence. There is a saying that too much of anything is not good. In this case, we can agree that excessive consumption of alcohol or drugs, especially among adolescents and young adults, is not good. According to a research conducted, this shows how alcohol consumption can impact students' grades and thus lead to other consequent terms such as death, low economic status, health-related failures of pregnancies and much more (White, Hingson.2013). In order to prove that alcohol and drug use is bad for young people, we need to look at the trigger that causes these people to become them, knowing that it could eventually affect them. Additionally, some of the issues that cause teens and young adults to drink under the legal age despite it being illegal range from middle of paper ......nces may involve cognitive abilities. My observation correlates with research that has been done that alcohol and substance abuse have a significant effect on the academic performance of adolescents and young adults. Faced with this growing problem, school programs dealing with drug addiction should be implemented as early as possible to prevent young people from indulging in drugs and alcohol. (2014, 01 01).
