  • Essay / Importance of Salat - 1357

Origins of Salat The most important misconception regarding the origin of Salat is that it was established and first introduced by the Prophet Muhammad. However, the emergence of Salat is believed to date back to the times of previous prophets such as Ibrahim and Isma'il. A commonality between all the messengers and prophets of Islam is that they were all sent by Allah to restore Tawheed in the hearts of people, submit them to Allah and establish regular prayer. It was Prophet Ibrahim who established the concept of salat and gave this religion the name Islam. This is proven in the Quran when Allah says: “…this is the worship of your father Abraham. It is He who named you Muslims, both before and in this (Apocalypse); that the Messenger may be your witness, and that you may be witnesses to men! So establish regular prayer, give charity regularly and hold fast to Allah! (22:78) (Ali)All the prophets and messengers, from Adam to Muhammad, conveyed the same message which was to worship Allah only through salat. Prophet Ibrahim regularly prayed and invoked his Lord for his descendants to establish salat as it is said in the Quran: O my Lord! Make me the one who establishes regular prayer, and also (raise him) among my offspring, O our Lord! And accept my prayer. (14:40)
