  • Essay / The controversial issue of cell phone use by students...

Many parents think that it is necessary for their children to have a cell phone with them for after school trips and also for tracking their children. As Minnetonka Principal David Adney said, "I see the benefits of students having camera phones - to take pictures at a prom or prom year, or to prove to parents that they are really where they say they are” (Adney, David). Parents are also concerned that their teenagers may have an emergency problem at school and may contact their parents immediately. In my opinion, students do not need cell phones during school hours because schools already have phones that help students contact their parents in case of an emergency. Additionally, if parents need to contact their children, they can do so through the school. After all this, most cell phones have cameras and this problem constitutes an invasion of privacy in schools. Some students who own camera phones misuse them. They can take photos or videos of other students changing clothes in the gym or locker rooms and distribute them around the school. This can also happen to teachers. As Mr. Collier said, “He would not tolerate being filmed or photographed by students inside or outside the classroom. Teachers are humans, individuals and want to protect their privacy” (Collier, Peter). Some students make fun of their teachers and make videos of students playing pranks on teachers.
