Essay / The Quest for Freedom: Life, Liberty and Liberty
There are many theories behind this, but one of the main reasons these problems exist is due to learned helplessness, it is that is, the tendency of people to accept things as they are. things are, thinking that action is futile, in the face of crushing defeat (McRaney 206). Crushing a defeat is not always necessary since the slightest inkling of a possible defeat can cause someone to give in, as in politics. Indeed, many people, when they vote, either think that their vote is one in a million, or that both candidates are in fact equally corrupt. So they decide not to vote at all. Ignorance can also come from learned helplessness. The American political system is extremely complex, and even understanding it is painful. Thus, people become reluctant to learn about politics as a whole, which is reinforced by the fact that many people view politicians as corrupt. Thinking that politicians are corrupt, or this skepticism, is not necessarily bad, but is necessary for democratic participation, compared to blind acceptance which should be avoided at all costs by citizens. But becoming too skeptical of government creates unnecessary distrust that spreads and hinders democracy and creates more inactivism and even the rise of antidemocratic values. This is why citizens must step up their efforts and participate in preventing corruption and promoting both their beliefs and democratic ideals, instead of free riding or ignoring politics.
