Essay / English Learning Social Language - 1321
In Content Strategies for English Language Learners, Reiss discusses six theoretical principles from many famous theorists. Reiss begins by introducing Jim Cummins' concepts of academic and social language, and how as teachers; we need to understand them and use them in classrooms to become better teachers of ELL students. Throughout his theory, he makes a point of emphasizing that social language develops much more quickly than academic language. Academic language uses higher vocabulary and high-level synonyms of common words for students, making the language more difficult to understand. Some ideas were expressed in the text to help manage the learning of these two languages for the ELL, such as giving pictures with texts/words to help provide clues, thus integrating academic language in all contexts . Another example of how to do this would be the general idea of scaffolding your students. Cummins provided a quadrant framework for examples of cognitively demanding and low-demanding and context-integrated and context-reduced content activities. Teachers can use scaffolds to adjust content for ELL students to change the difficulty level (quadrants) so they can better understand the academic task at hand. I found this initial information on Cummins' concepts very informative. Although, throughout our classes, I learned that learning social language is faster than learning academic language, this passage helped make the reason why this is so more lucrative, because the text includes distinct examples and instances. Additionally, after reading this and hearing some ideas you can implement in the classroom to narrow the gap between social and academic language learning time, I feel more confident that I can use these strategies... ... middle of paper.... .. a new side of them to get to know them better. All these ideas seemed great to me. I'm not sure it's really legal to conduct home visits, given that this article was published in the 1990s, but overall I'm sure the idea would give teachers a lot of new information about students' lifestyles and the reasons for their behavior. , etc. Everything I read in these two chapters and this article was very helpful and really opened my eyes to new ideas and thoughts about teaching. It's crazy to think that much of what I read in these articles had never occurred to me before. I am excited to take this information from these texts and try to apply it while observing and helping in my application class. I will also definitely apply and add this new knowledge to my repertoire as a future teacher..
