ETA means Euskadi Ta Askatasuna in Basque, or in English, Basque Fatherland and Freedom. It originated from EKIN in Spain in 1959 and formed as a Basque radical separatist group. Dissatisfied with the moderate nationalism of the main Basque party, ETA is dedicated to a separate nation-state for the Basque people, an ethnic group inhabiting parts of northern Spain and southwestern France. It currently has around 300 members. Current leaders include Juan Cruz Maiztegui Bengoa and José Luis Eciolaza Galán, but very little is known about ETA's power hierarchy. They are extremely secretive about their leadership structure. However, in 1992, the three main leaders of ETA – “military” leader Francisco Mujika Garmendia, political leader José Luis Alvarez Santacristina and logistics leader José María Arregi Erostarbe were arrested. The majority of their attacks have targeted businesses and Spanish government officials, particularly members of ETA. security services and the judiciary. Their most common tactics are bombings and assassinations. However, they are known to issue warnings before their attacks. Their most infamous attack was the assassination of Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco in December 1973. He was killed when an underground bomb exploded under his car. Blanco was considered the most likely successor to Spanish dictator Franco. More than twenty years later, ETA nearly assassinated politician José María Aznar, who would later become Prime Minister. ETA is financed by kidnappings and thefts. However, extortion constitutes the main income of their activities.
