Elie Wiesel was an ordinary child because of his religion, he suffered the harsh events of the holocaust and today inspires many people with his story of how he survived. Ellie was born on September 30, 1928 in Sighet, Transylvania. His parents, Shlomo and Sarah, had three daughters Hilda, Bea and Tsiporah and one son, Ellie. Ellie was the third youngest of the four. His parents, Shlomo and Sarah, owned a grocery store in Sighet. His family spoke Yiddish at home and in public places they spoke German. Ellie began attending a Jewish school at the age of three. His studies included classical and modern Hebrew and the Bible, then studied the Talmud. Ellie was very focused on her religious studies. In 1942, Wiesel celebrated his bar mitzvah.
