Essay / 1984: A prophecy for the future? - 1052
The novel 1984 is the story of a future civilization ruled by a totalitarian government. When the book was published in 1949, the thoughts and ideas seemed like a prophecy for the future. A totalitarian government is one of the strictest forms of government, providing the least freedom to the people. A totalitarian government is a mixture of the military, individual leaders and a national political party. Usually, the leader is a person who possesses some sort of charisma that makes their authority inherent and compelling. The leader is defined as the incarnation of the will and ideal of the nation. Rulers build cults around themselves and transform public rituals into occasions of veneration. Public rallies and parades were intended to show the strength of the leader. The military would operate according to the will of the leader and evolve to meet the needs of the government. The party is always right and discussion is impossible. The goal is to unite its objectives with those of the State. Representative legislative bodies were eliminated as regimes gave people the option of voting the way the party wanted or not voting at all, so it seemed like they had a choice in government. They constantly created propaganda to improve the appearance of their government. It was essentially a government that controlled everything. They filled minds with propaganda, suppressed freedom of religion, and even attempted to control the personal lives of citizens. The government wanted the people to have no thoughts of their own and insisted on having the constant support of its citizens. The state controlled everything, your thoughts, your actions and even your history. The 1940s were full of tension and change. ...... middle of paper ......ing=false&displayGroups=&sortBy=&search_within_results=&p=SUIC&action=e&catId=&activityType=&scanId=&documentId=GALE%7CCX3424700026&source=Bookmark&u=rox3391&jsid=65c1d5f97c7705289911de2ed51 4 47df>.Musser, Rick . “The 1940s.” History of American journalism.
