  • Essay / Progress Leads to Success - 1185

Henry Ford said: “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, working together is success”, Ford's quote applies to everything and everyone who come together at the beginning to make progress that leads to success, just as we must do to help the mentally ill. Things need to change so that people with mental illness do not hurt themselves or those around them in society. Law and psychology must work together to develop stricter guidelines to prevent mentally stable people from manipulating the rights we grant to the mentally ill. They must also treat the mentally ill before a crime occurs and, finally, the mentally ill must not be placed in care. in prison due to the more serious effects that will hurt them even more in the long run. Doing a more rigorous mental capacity test would reduce the number of liars who simply rely on the insanity defense to get a lesser sentence. The law has already shown a good start in trying to prevent perfectly mentally stable people from manipulating the right to the crime of insanity that the law has given to the mentally ill who actually need it. “About a quarter of states have established a separate verdict of “Guilty but Mentally Ill” (GBMI)... The consequence of receiving the GBMI is that the individual is found guilty and sentenced to a criminal sentence. It is a verdict available to the jury when the finding is that the accused committed the act charged but is mentally disordered, but not to the level necessary to meet the crime of insanity” (Torry 259- 260). The group has clearly started to make small changes by creating the GBMI, but they still need to make more progress so people don't game the system. For example, Terry Sturgis, 35 years old... in the middle of the newspaper... uncertainty about life after prison and inadequate health services" (187), placing these types of people in prison does nothing other than making things worse. In conclusion, law and psychology need to do a better job working together so we can achieve the best outcome for everyone. Being mentally ill isn't a bad thing, it's just a bad thing when you can't control your impulses: "It's a disorder that impairs the human mind and makes it difficult to distinguish between actions that are right and wrong … These are brain disorders resulting in a diminished ability to cope with the demands of life” (Torry 255). By uniting, we can progress and succeed by establishing stricter guild lines, treating the mentally ill before crime occurs, and placing them in institutions rather than prisons. This success can be generally positive for the individual and society..
