Essay / How to Reduce Offender Recidivism - 817
Retribution is “a punishment administered for a wrong committed” (American Heritage Dictionary). Rehabilitation means “to make life useful, through therapy and education” (American Heritage Dictionary). What gives the best results? So far, it appears that rehabilitation is the better of the two forms of punishment. People expect offenders to emerge from prison reformed and become productive members of society. Retributive justice inflicts pain on the offender. It only teaches the offender to inflict pain on others. Rehabilitating offenders through education and programs gives them the tools they need to survive their release from prison. Offenders have the opportunity to take advantage of programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, prison employment, religious programs, treatment programs, and educational opportunities. Often, when an offender enters prison without a high school diploma or GED, the sentencing judge will require the offender to obtain their GED as part of their sanctions. The use of an indefinite period...... middle of paper ......discrimination. In fact, it's like being punished twice for a crime, or what the justice system calls double jeopardy. Very few professions should be allowed to conduct background checks. Some examples of jobs that should be allowed to conduct a background check should be public safety jobs, educators, and government jobs. However, if a person is applying for a job such as a mechanic, office assistant, waiter or cook, their criminal history should not be weighed against them. Because the criminal history box is included on applications, many released offenders find it difficult, if not impossible, to find employment. As stated previously, the three most important elements for reducing recidivism are a job, a good support system, and housing. Without a job, the offender is unable to support himself or his family without resorting to crime..
