    In order to understand the educational gap, it is first important to understand the effects of poverty on students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. An important part of the educational function is the socio-economic background of the student. Studies show that 30 to 50% of behaviors are genetic and 50 to 70% are explained by the environment (ASCD). If behaviors are the predominant result of environmental factors, then it is important to see the difference between the environments of low-SES students and those of affluent students. There are many factors to consider when considering behavior. Students with low social status face considerable challenges on a daily basis that are different from those of affluent students. There are four risk factors in particular that affect children living in poverty: emotional and social challenges; acute and chronic stressors; cognitive delays; and health and safety issues. Students from low-income neighborhoods tend to face emotional and social instability. The problem begins in early childhood.
