For this proposal, we conducted a survey asking people's opinions on the facilities available for students with disabilities at Wayne State University and also asked students who have personally used the facilities themselves and speak about their experience. We have also conducted interviews with students who have personally used these facilities and plan to support our information with further studies and facts. Action Plan We gathered primary research by conducting a survey, asking Wayne State University students their opinions on disability facilities and accommodations around campus. Our main focus was primarily the Student Center and State Hall buildings. Some of these questions included: 1) Are there enough easily accessible ramps in both buildings? 2) Do you think State Hall and the Student Center have enough ramps for people with disabilities? 3) Are there enough easily accessible ramps outside State Hall and the Student Center?4) Do you think the elevators are suitable for people with disabilities (height)?Primary research from surveysImages above show the results of surveys of students who attended Wayne State University. For the first question, 10 people answered, one person answered yes and nine others answered no. which gives us 90% of people saying there aren't enough ramps inside buildings. Second question, 10 people answered, two people said yes and eight people said no. which gives us 80% of people saying that both buildings did not have enough ramps. For the third question, 11 people answered, two people answered yes and nine people answered no. which gives us 81% of people saying there aren't enough ramps outside buildings. For the last question, 11 people answered, two people answered yes and the other nine answered no. which gave us 81% of people saying they are the wrong size. Although only a small number of people responded, the responses were very consistent and similar. It is reasonable to assume that this survey is valid enough on which to base our research. In addition to conducting a survey, we aimed to conduct an interview with a student with a disability or a student who is injured and needs to temporarily use disability services. The investigation is justified as primary research because we set out on our own to collect new data on the topic. The category that this type of primary research falls into would be surveys. By creating a simple yes and no survey, it will be easier to collect data and hopefully result in a higher yield of results. Finding articles on the Internet or in databases is justified as secondary research because these are experiments that have already been conducted and we are simply using this information to support our point and shed light on an issue that we have noticed around Wayne State University.Primary Research from InterviewsWe had the opportunity to talk to a few students who had to use some of the disability services at Wayne State University indue to injuries or accidents. Two students were interviewed and asked the following simple questions.1. What type of disability do you have or did you have?2. Do or have you found that Wayne State University's disability services help you get around more easily?3. Overall, what do you think could be improved on campus to help people with disabilities? The first student had a torn ACL and had to use crutches for an entire semester. When asked if the services around Wayne State helped, they said, “Yes, they did the State Hall elevator specially.” When asked what improvements they would like to see, they mentioned that "there should be more disabled buttons on the doors because it is difficult to open the doors with crutches." The second student we spoke to was in a car accident that caused him to crash. wheelchair for a few months. They stated that "there are several [disability services] that helped, but [they] would have liked more because they were sometimes inconvenient." When asked what could be improved on campus, two students mentioned that “improvements can be made, including additional ramps around campus and inside buildings.” As you can see, although some services are available for students, they are almost not enough. Speaking to students who personally need to use or have had to use these services due to an accident, it is clear that there is still much work to be done to make Wayne State University a disability-friendly campus. More ramps should be included inside and outside of buildings to allow students who are unable to walk to easily move around in daily life as well as in the event of an emergency such as a fire. Due to the limited services available, they are also used and abused not only by those who need them, but also by those who do not, such as elevators. It is not only important for Wayne State to add new services, but also to maintain its current services. Similar to researching data through surveys, researching information through interviews can also be considered primary research because all information collected is new data relating to the research we are conducting.
