Hintsa GirmayENGL 1301- 73480Essay-1 Observation Essay (Work Draft) Why do people go to the mall?I am sitting on a bench at the Irving Mall. I can smell cinnamon, hints of coffee, cleaning fluids, and other scents that I can't distinguish. I wonder why people go to the mall. I know it's supposed to be a place to buy things. That's the whole point, isn't it? Go shopping? However, as I look around me, I notice that a good portion of the people I see, including couples, teenagers, families, and groups from different subcultures, aren't even carrying shopping bags. They seem to be here for other reasons. A couple I saw earlier were holding hands, seeming to be strolling just for the pleasure of being together. I'm not sure why they are here, but I wonder if they even bought anything today? The time I would stop at the Subway and order a six-inch meatball sub with extra cheese and a Coke. Sitting nearby, I take a bite. It's delicious! Of course, in my hunger, I didn't let it cool very well and I can feel a slight sting inside my mouth, on the top. I quickly drink a soft drink to soothe the burn. Other people seem to enjoy their food as well. Some have Mexican, some Chinese, and some dishes that I can't make out from the angle I'm currently sitting. This leads me to another conclusion that some people come to eat in shopping malls. Although there are probably many other reasons why people like to go to the different malls in the United States, this short essay has only looked at some of the reasons why people come to the mall other than just for shopping. As I exit, I slide my hand along the smooth metal ramp that leaves the mall. It's cold, but I can't take my hand away. It's also pretty fun to do. I decide that the next time I come back, I want to buy a pretzel from Aunt Anne's. But who knows? Maybe next time I'll just go back to the mall
