Project Coast was a scheme to use chemical and biological agents on the people of South Africa; Tear gas was not enough for the then Prime Minister, PW Botha (Gould & Folb, 2002). Botha employed Wouter Basson who ran the program. Basson used some extremely lethal agents such as CX powder and mustard gas. The apartheid government attacked its political rivals. Project Coast known for research, development and deployment of chemical and biological warfare. Basson was known in many areas as Dr. Death following the events of Project Coast. Basson based his research on many Western countries that were already at the forefront of advancements in weapons programs. Basson conducted various trial and error experiments on behalf of the apartheid government. The biological experiments stemmed from a well-known hypothesis conducted in secret, such as a black bomb targeting the country's black population. Basson began using viruses such as anthrax, ricin and E. coli. Nerve gases were general in nature for Basson with Sarin and VX. Many Basson preparations are used by both police and military forces. The experiments associated with Project Coast have not been discovered due to the nature of secrecy. The 1980s were one of the darkest times for South Africa and its people, with the threat of chemical weapons against its own people as a tactic of control and fear. The initial objective was to combat the weapons used against its troops in the conflicts in Angola. Acquiring information and technology from outside sources was the government's priority as its threat analysis improved over the years. Governments start with seemingly brilliant ideas that seem to defend their people against chemical and biological attacks, but given the end state of that regime, the opposite of the beginning. Project Coast is shrouded in secrecy and is considered another South African genocide that remains unanswered. People suffered from poisons, genetic manipulation and introduced diseases for the sole purpose of containing political protests and alliances with neighboring territories.
