Uniforms: To Apply or Not to Apply When my friend was in eighth grade, her school decided to mandate a uniform. She remembers that most of her friends would go out of their way to show who they were: scarves, colorful undershirts, crazy headbands and colorful jewelry because they wanted to express themselves. They refused to give in to the uniform. Schools should not mandate a uniform for many reasons. Uniforms will not help improve schools because clothing does not affect a student's way of thinking or stop the judgment of other students, and some parents cannot afford it. Parents cannot always afford to buy children the clothes they need. . Uniforms can be expensive: “For a uniform shirt it can cost up to $20, for pants it can cost up to $25. Not to mention all the necessities associated with wearing a uniform. In total, you may have to spend almost $100 on the uniform” (average cost of school uniforms? N.pag). $100 for about two uniforms is crazy! It is possible to get several pairs of jeans and several shirts for the same price...
