  • Essay / Analysis of the True Grit film adaptation - 643

Charles Portis's famous novel True Grit, published in 1968, was the basis for the 1969 film and the 2010 film. The Coen brothers' 2010 film covers a lot stuff from the book, but I think they made Mattie's character very different from the book. In the book, Mattie was a fearless 14-year-old who was not afraid of getting revenge on her father's killer, Tom Chaney. Some events in the film made her seem tough, but the actor was too nice and cute to play Mattie. They also made her much more emotional than in the book. Even though they covered most of the events in the book, I still don't like how they made the movie. Mattie is a main character in the book so I figured she would stay the same for both the book and the movie. I had imagined Mattie as a stubborn, tough 14-year-old with real courage. But when I watched the movie, I think it changed Mattie, it made her character soft and different from the book. She was also told that she was ugly several times during the book, so I had a clear idea of what Mattie looked like. I liked the Mattie in the book better than the one in the movie, but in movement I think it makes her soft. Hailee Steinfeld is the person who played Mattie in the movie and if you look at a photo of her, in my opinion she was too pretty to play Mattie. In the book, there is no romantic connection between Mattie and La Boeuf. However, in the film, when La Boeuf leaves them for the second time, Mattie and La Boeuf talk and Mattie doesn't want him to leave. You can see the connection between them and the anger between them disappears. In the book Mattie is always made at La Boeuf and they fight a lot and she thinks he is a stupid Texan and doesn't trust...... middle of paper ...... the one in the book is best. In the film, she falls into a pit and her leg gets stuck in the roots of the pit. In the book it was more intense and she was stuck in a hole and falling through and her arm was broken and she needed something to keep her from falling into the hole. This scene added to how brave and determined Mattie was to prove to them that she could do it. In the end, I liked the book much more than the movie. I like that there is more to describe the character. I loved all the events in the book and how they showed Mattie's determination to catch her father's killer. I didn't like the movie because of how they changed some of the main events and how they changed some of the characters from the book. If the movie was just a movie it would have been a good movie, but it was created from a book so I think it should be exactly like the book..
