ELDER ABUSEElder abuse became a major problem for the US healthcare system a few decades ago after the passage of the Medicaid & Medicare Legislation Act under the title XX of the SSA which amplified the existence of human abuse (Wangmo, 2010). This research paper aims to analyze the challenges related to abuse, neglect and exploitation of elderly people by the perpetrators. In the United States alone, between 700,000 and 1.2 million older adults are victims of elder abuse per year, but only 450,000 new cases per year are reported. The main goal is to focus on the types of abuse, how to identify and prevent neglect by increasing awareness among the public, family members and medical professionals. What is the role and responsibility of a healthcare provider? How can someone recognize the prevalence of elder abuse or neglect, respond to such an allegation, and report to a local resource such as APS (Adult Protective Services)? What factors contribute to these types of abuse? The National Research Council defines child abuse as: the intentional action of any physical act causing pain or injury, inflicting emotional distress/psychological harm, sexual harassment, financial exploitation, and neglect (Bonnie & Wallace, 2003, p.35). As older adults age, they become more vulnerable to mistreatment due to health problems, such as cognitive impairment and physical decline. Due to the lack of a data collection agency and the absence of a U.S. national report, there is an ongoing debate over the accuracy and statistics of elder abuse incidents. The National Academy of Sciences reported that only 1 in 14 cases of abuse are filed for further investigation and only 1 in 24 cases are reported. According to the "Census Bureau", in 2010 people aged 65 ˃ had ↑ to 13%...... middle of article ...... significant compassion analyzing the severity of abuse, neglect and elder abuse in the United States. The results of their studies were based on forensic investigations, victim surveys, APS and awareness programs, and NCEA cases. Further research is needed to analyze the intensity and risk intervention programs associated with specific subtypes of abuse or neglect. The articles were easy to read and presented a clear point of view in informing readers about elder abuse, who may not have been aware of this debated topic. The role of any health professional or caregiver has been highlighted as everyone's responsibility and by law to: participate, identify the signs, educate themselves, report, prevent and support law enforcement to protect the elderly victim and punish his attacker who runs free within the community by targeting his next victim.
