  • Essay / Technology and the Development of Societies - 753

Technology and Societies I agree that technology has influenced social and cultural change, however, I believe that societies themselves act significantly as catalysts in directing this influence. The impact of technology on individuals and societies began very early, when humans began using objects in their environment to help them accomplish certain jobs and tasks; for example: hunting, agriculture and cooking. Therefore, ancient civilizations like the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age were named after the materials that people had adopted to make their tools, or what are called artifacts . These names imply that artifacts were the focal point of every civilization in any period. As historical archeology indicates, the development of materials and artifacts of any civilization is associated with consequent changes in social structures; cultural norms and appearance; and religious values and beliefs. In this way, it could be concluded that the relationship between society and technology is reciprocal. In other words, individuals manipulate natural resources to invent the tools they need; in turn, these tools affect the lifestyle and activities of individuals. Thus, the more natural resources a culture exploits, the more likely it is to become civilized and flourish, as the history of Greek, Roman, Chinese and Egyptian civilizations tells us. Interestingly, the interaction between societies and technological artifacts always has a significant impact on technology and society. For example, the intervention of road signs and traffic lights has helped to safely manage the movement of people and vehicles on the roads. In essence, the question that might arise here is who has control over technological development and...... middle of paper. .....are still published in digital and printed copies. According to a Scarborough study, nearly 54% of newspaper readers prefer to read the print format of their local newspaper. Another example is the fact that many people only consume organic foods and products, despite the temptation of food companies to attract the attention of customers into purchasing artificial products. Additionally, technology is sometimes adapted to accommodate religious beliefs or practices. For example, Muslims use a compass to point the direction toward Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, to perform their daily prayers. These examples confirm that technology and societies interact mutually. Humans invent technologies and adapt the changes that occur because of that technology. Generally speaking, technology affects people's lives to the extent that they allow themselves to be affected.
