  • Essay / The biopsychosocial model of mental health and the...

My personal view on mental illness is an illness that requires care, compassion, affection, empathy, sympathy and recognition of its existence. As a psychologist, I will bring to the field a wide range of skills such as being very open-minded, diverse and culturally competent, accepting and respecting all religious beliefs, being unbiased, without judgment and able to speak five different languages. I chose mental health psychology because I want to make a positive difference and impact the lives of the children and young people I work with. I support the biopsychosocial model and holistic approach when treating someone with mental illness. Individuals must be treated as a “whole person, not pieces of a puzzle” if we are to help them improve or take control of their lives. Treatment becomes effective when it addresses the client's biological, psychological and sociological aspects.
