  • Essay / Literary Analysis of A Raisin in the Sun - 2106

A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry takes place on the South Side of Chicago between the time of World War II and the present day. The main conflict surrounds the head of household of the Younger family, Mr. Younger, over life insurance and trying to figure out what to do with the money. The family consists of Mama Younger, her son, Walter Younger, her daughter, Beneatha Younger, Walter's wife, Ruth Younger, and Walter and Ruth's son, Travis Younger. This essay will focus on two of the main characters, Ruth Younger and Beneatha Younger. Ruth Younger and Beneatha Younger are distinguished in several social aspects by the patriarchal society that surrounds them as well as by social constructivism and their misogynistic family. In “The Raisin in the Sun,” Ruth and Beneatha fight the norms of patriarchal society. In "The Raisin in the Sun", Ruth is introduced on page 1472 as "a pretty girl, but it is obvious that life has not been as great as she expected, and disappointment has already started to appear in his face. In a few years, even before the age of thirty-five, she will be known among her family as a “sedentary woman”. Ruth is presented as a girl and not a woman. This makes it seem like Ruth is still growing even though she is in her thirties. Ruth is seen as a stereotypical 1950s housewife. She cooks, cleans, supports her husband, but at the same time, she does not share her dreams or ideas with him. Beneatha dreams of going to school and becoming a doctor, but while she is in college, Beneatha explores vast ideas and hobbies. Throughout the play, Beneatha is searching for herself even though her family doesn't quite understand it. Beneatha is a person who is constantly evolving and slowly becoming socially constructive. In the first act, Beneatha is known for her hobbies by her mother on page 1484: "Lord, my child, you do not know what to be sick of now - as if you were sick of this little work with you -even ? How long will it be before the acting group you joined that year? And what was it the year before? Just like Walter, she has many dreams and ideas that she wants to realize in her life. She claims to be independent, but in reality it is her family that allows her to continue what she wants to achieve and when the money disappears, Beneatha learns that she is not as independent as she is..
