  • Essay / The Cruelty of Man to His Neighbor - 1054

Occurring in the late 1700s in France, the French Revolution was a period of great emotion, ferocity, tribulation and passion during which the Peasants were treated completely unfairly by selfish people. and a selfish aristocratic class. Dickens captures this period beautifully in his brilliant and iconic novel, A Tale of Two Cities. Massive bloodshed caused by the peasants' rebellion against their oppressors dominated this era. People didn't know if life was getting better or worse, but things were definitely changing everywhere. Dickens's excellent uses of metaphors of scarecrows and birds of fine song and feathers, knitting and noble prisoners in The Force contribute greatly to the theme of man's inhumanity to his fellow man. First, Dickens uses the metaphor of scarecrows and birds of beautiful song and feather to represent the oppressive relationship between peasants and aristocrats. The peasants are lifeless and pathetic, walking around like scarecrows, because of the cruelty of the aristocrats. They are hungry, miserable and desperate. To show how desperate and oppressed they became, Dickens states: "For the time had come when the emaciated scarecrows of this region should have watched the lamplighter, in their idleness and hunger, as long as they could conceive the idea. to improve his method and hoist men up by these ropes and pulleys, to enlighten them on the darkness of their condition” (Dickens 23). The peasants stare at the lamplighter, imagining that they themselves are being pulled out of their state of oppression and darkness by its system of pulleys and directed toward the light, or toward a better life. Later, they will revolt against the aristocrats because of their oppression, as Dickens presents...... middle of paper ......ocrates. This metaphor of ghosts perfectly shows that the peasants have crossed the line and become as bad as the aristocrats. The use of scarecrows and beautifully feathered birds, knitwear and noble prisoners in The Force achieves Dickens's goal of showing how horrible man can be to his fellow man. The aristocrats ignored the suffering of the peasants, which would definitely affect them later, as the roles were reversed, like karma. Meanwhile, the peasants' thirst and desperation for revolution grow, as do their plans for revenge. The noble prisoners show how the guilty and the innocent are all killed, despite everything, and the ruthlessness of the revolution. Dickens shows, through his deliberate symbolism and metaphors, how the oppressed can become oppressors, how easily the situation can be reversed, and how quickly things can change..
