Essay / The McMillan Sisters and Early Childhood Education forever the world of education. Sisters Margaret and Rachel McMillian influenced education in more ways than one by developing outdoor preschool. Not only had they introduced the idea of starting education at a younger age than the brand new kindergarten program, but their school was also designed for children from low-income areas who also needed extra care. A unique concept at the time that captured my interest and made me want to learn more about their program and its effect on early childhood education. Outdoor preschool has done more than start the educational process earlier, allowing children to have a better education. . The preschool gets its name from what the sisters wanted to achieve through their school, “to care, to nurture and to learn,” and that is exactly what they did: to nurture. Through their programme, they worked to improve the welfare of "slum children" by campaigning for school meals and opening Britain's first school clinic. The aim of this program was to improve the child mentally and physically before he entered mainstream school. This concept of an early start to education has largely influenced education, particularly through the spread of preschools across the world. In the United States, preschools were opened to middle-class children, not only to provide children with early learning experiences to help them develop, but also to give parents free time while providing a feeling of belonging to a community.
