Essay / One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
The roles of the past, present and futureSince the beginning of time, and far beyond the unimaginable, life began with the assumption that death is the destiny of all people. Many have tried to escape this fate, many have tried to modify or delay it; However, from the first page of each story, each word used to describe the events that matter most to us moves closer and closer to the final sentence. The concept of time has been seen as linear in nature; As we try to analyze the past and improve our future, the majority of concerns focus on the present. We are a world of the present, often forgetting what brought us to the present and often forgetting what we need to do for the future. Past, present and future: these terms represent stories and events across generations; although, as a species, our nature has not changed much during these periods. The novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez criticizes this trait in humans: even though the characters and setting may change, the stories always seem to stay the same. The timeline of One Hundred Years of Solitude presents these facts by adopting a cyclical concept of time. The terms past, present and future no longer represent a boundary between eras; instead, the past is the future, the future is the present, and the present is the past. The novel is told through six generations of the Buendía family – eventually the reader can quickly see that the blessings and curses of one generation are not excluded from others. Márquez raises many questions regarding the nature of man and the relationship with the fate of death. Additionally, the author uses a cyclical timeline to criticize the infinite nature of man; the lines between the past, present and future...... middle of paper ......loneliness of the world. Because a world that refuses to learn from the previous generation will soon cease to exist.Works CitedA.K.
