Essay / Lesbianism: Women and Lipstick Lesbians - 2424
Lesbianism is a real sexuality that is extensively studied, mainly because when something is not fully understood, the idea is examined and conceptualized rigorously. Since the formation of the religion, lesbianism has been considered a sin; As technology advances and time passes, people have gradually become more tolerant. Heterosexuals often misunderstand lesbians, as do lesbians who judge others with the same sexual identity. Most people think that all lesbians are the same, masculine women. But that's not the case, sexuality is more fluid and lesbians, like all of us, are individuals. The lesbian community is diverse, and stereotypical misunderstandings, much like those that exist in the heterosexual community about lesbians, exist among lesbians themselves. In order to fully understand the topic presented, certain terms need to be defined. Many people do not know the full definition of these terms because they are often misused. First, a butch is usually a masculine lesbian, but it can also be used to refer to either gender as masculine. Femme is the opposite, it usually refers to a lesbian who is feminine, but it also means a drag queen, and it can be used to describe women or men as feminine (Queer-ictionary). Typically, when people think of lesbians, they think of a butch/femme relationship in which one takes on the role of a boy, the butch, and the other takes on a female role, the woman. This is the type of relationship that most people think of when talking about lesbian relationships. However, there are also lipstick lesbians, who are usually closeted lesbians who reject the idea of butches and love to wear makeup, dress up, and wear high heels. Usually lesbians who have red lipstick are attracted to other lips...... middle of paper ...... people would increase which seems to be the case. People have difficulty understanding others who are different from them. With education and exposure to all types of lesbians and gay people, stereotypes and misunderstandings about non-conforming individuals can diminish. Gender norms and stereotypes go hand in hand, but most people get around them in one way or another. It is important to understand lesbians and sexuality is not a clear concept, it is fluid. The queer community as a whole also needs to learn to be more accepting of each other and supportive of people no matter how they present themselves. Stereotypes are only an attitude towards a group of individuals and do not necessarily lead to prejudice, behavior against groups. So far, the LGBT community has come a long way from stereotypes, but there is still a long way to go to integrate them into social norms..
