Constant hassles and bickering are rare, and they all aspired to achieve a certain goal, establishing the perfect utopia in which to live. Sounds like heaven, doesn't it? During the 1700s and 1800s, many utopias took their rightful place in the history of utopias. Utopias like Brook Farm and Fruitlands established community, but failed to design good guidelines for their members to live by. For example, Brook Farm relied on young people to do the dirty work, and the Fruitland community required its members to establish a strict vegan diet, which had serious consequences on individual health. On the other hand, the basic principles of the Shakers made them the most desirable and prosperous society of their time.
