Essay / The Internet Parent Generation - 1038
In “What's Wrong With Kids Today?” » In this article, the author highlights how a research organization found that the younger generation was ignorant of history and literature. Teenagers like to spend more time in front of the computer chatting with friends than reading a book. Although she admits that the popularity of social networks has generated new creative writers among our teenagers. The author further suggests that the older generation should not view the Internet as a "bad guy" but as a medium that can one day create award-winning writers. New technologies can have a great influence on today's young generation, but we, the older generation, can be responsible adults and guide these children to use these technologies to progress and improve themselves, and not otherwise. I agree with Amy Goldwasser for most of her article, especially when she says that "the Internet has turned adolescents into honest documentarians of their own lives; they are reporters embedded in their homes, their schools, and their own heads." . Even though these children spend a lot of time on the Internet, we tend to overlook how getting online has improved their ability to write and express themselves. Many of these teenagers discovered their writing abilities through this medium. Previously, one of the teachers' concerns was students' loss of interest in writing. However, when social media became popular, they started wanting to write. According to Justine Cassell, professor of communications studies at Northwestern University, "there is clear evidence that writing and creating art, music and videos on the social Internet develops literacy and creative skills . among today’s adolescents” (Clemmitt). Obviously, the Internet has a positive side...... middle of paper ......n and Safe Eyes. Parents should also talk to their children about the benefits and risks of the Internet and help them stay safe online. Tell them not to give out their personal information and discuss how it can harm them. We must also teach them good ethics in the use of this technology, because in some cases some use the Internet to harm, threaten, deceive and commit crimes. Cyberbullying has already taken many lives. We therefore need to know if our children are already victims or perpetrators of this crime. As parents, we need to be proactive in our children's internet lives and interact positively. Apparently, we can help make our children safe and responsible online, and stop labeling them as “ignorant.” “We are the first generation of Internet parents,” says Cassell, “we need to learn how our work has changed” (Clemmitt).
