  • Essay / The importance of discrimination in the secret life of...

Lily faced her own form of racism when she believed that her caregiver Rosaleen was like all other uneducated black people. Lily and Rosaleen were taking a trip to town and both their lives changed. Lily witnessed her black caregiver, Rosaleen, being beaten by three white men for taking snuff from their shoes. It was an act of violence that was not justified and she did not deserve this treatment. The reason she was beaten by these men was the color of her skin. The worst part is that there was a police officer present when all this happened and he did absolutely nothing to help. Instead, he held Lily back so she wouldn't intervene in the assault. This shows how corrupt the justice system was and how it allowed almost anything to happen. The justice system had its own type of laws, and in those laws, black people never prevailed. The men who attacked Rosaleen were white and were neither arrested nor charged with anything. Rosaleen was arrested for nothing and Lily was released, then the police tried to frame Rosaleen for stealing fans from the church so she could stay in jail. Police brutality has been a trending topic in the media for decades. Police were said to use excessive force against minorities. All over television there are cases of police officers killing or using excessive force against black people and others.
