Essay / Reading outside of school - 1136
In general, students do not read outside of class. They are stressed because of homework and just go home to watch TV to get rid of their worries. A fact reported in a survey of 136 high school freshmen is that “41% of freshmen receive homework every day of the week” (Wilson 3). A more effective way to erase the stress of the school day would be to sit down and read an enjoyable book. Most of the students in this modern era do not have time to immerse themselves in a book and get lost in its pages for hours. Part of this could be because students are overwhelmed with homework or are too lazy. Another reason could be that they have no motivation to read a book, because without pictures, books have no meaning to them. To inspire students to love reading for the rest of their lives, teachers and schools should allow students to choose a book, make multiple trips to the library, and expose them to different genres of books. In elementary school, students typically go to the library at least once a week or month to choose a book to read for independent reading. Sometimes students don't return to class with a book because they have no desire to read. It would be better if students had a say in what the library offers. We must understand that “children are the real consumers of resources” (Sanacore 1) in libraries. So, librarians should always have student-friendly books on the shelves. In order to obtain books that will appeal to younger students, teachers should begin by observing students “browsing and choosing materials in the school library” (Sanacore 2). If teachers notice a trend in the books students are reading, they should... middle of paper... they want to. Of course, some students don't like reading and sometimes reading causes more stress, but in the beginning they weren't taught to like reading. If someone has such an aversion to reading, they are not a reader and that is fine. Some people are not the reading type. When school teachers nurture a child's love of reading, the world can become more literate and engage more in reading instead of watching television or playing video games. Without reading, one would not have the motivation to learn what interests him. So encourage independent reading throughout elementary, middle, and even high school because students will become immersed in their work and lead more productive lives. Reading a book can educate someone about an issue and it can benefit them for a lifetime. It all starts with the younger generation and the library.
