Direct instruction refutes the idea that students will suddenly develop skills on their own. Instead, direct instruction systematically teaches students in scaffolded steps, helping them see both the purpose and outcome of each step. This is a basic research program. “Direct instruction has long met the needs of learners faced with complex, numerous and different learning problems” (Luiselli, Christian, Russo, Wilczynski, 2008, p. 201). Direct instruction was successful in targeting reading. Reading Mastery is a program designed for direct instruction aimed at accelerating growth in reading. “The National Reading Panel Report (2000) and Put Reading First (Armbruster, Lehr, and Osborn 2001) identified five areas critical to reading success: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension.” (Luiselli, 2008, p. 204).
