Communication competence is the ability that an individual possesses to choose the correct communication behavior that is not only effective, but also appropriate for a particular situation. Competent and effective communication between group members creates an atmosphere of trust and a sense of belonging. When the level at which group members feel appreciated and valued is higher, the more likely those individuals are to be committed to the group and the organization, which, in turn, makes it easier to achieve team goals. For an individual to be competent in communication, he or she must be able to recognize the particular skills deemed necessary in all specific situations, and be motivated and able to put these skills to use. For an individual to develop competent communication skills, it is necessary for him or her to practice these skills. Competent communication is the practice of sharing with other individuals using knowledge, skills, sensitivity, commitment and ethics. Learning to communicate competently in groups is of significant importance to all individuals. Communication Skill Describe each method for acquiring communication skill. In general, there are five methods that a person can use in order to improve relevance and effectiveness in a group: This can be accomplished by acquiring knowledge, refining and improving communication skills, developing sensitivity , increasing engagement and using ethical standards in communication preferences (Rothwell, 2013, p. 26). I would test communication skills in a group by ensuring that all group members have the skills and knowledge required to work toward the objectives and goals. Additionally, group members must demonstrate sensitivity, demonstrate commitment, and behave ethically. All of this needs to be expressed to employees through training and shared throughout the organization, from the top level down.
