  • Essay / Similarities Between German Expressionism and Cinema

After coming to power, Hitler took complete control of all aspects of art and destroyed anything he considered "destructive to culture ยป (Naas). This caused many German directors to move to the United States, where the film industry was growing exponentially. Bringing with them their styles and techniques, a new genre formed in the mid-1930s called film noir. Film noir, like German Expressionism, focuses on negative emotions like helplessness and madness while using the same aesthetic like black and white contrast. Unlike German Expressionist directors, American film noir directors introduced American audiences to a new motif: the femme fatale. The dark and strong femme fatale of noir is the main female character in these films. These women are given not only sexual powers, but also ambitions (Belton). These women clash with the male protagonist, who is generally antisocial and must be strong in his crime.
