Essay / Communist society in Ayn Rand's book, Anthem - 869
Final draft In Ayn Rand's book, Anthem shows the struggle of the individual against a government that refuses to recognize the value of the individual, a communist culture. Equality 7-2521 is an intelligent and determined innovator who challenges himself to break the rules of his stifling society and discover the forbidden word, the word that changes everything: "Ego". By discovering this lost word, Equality rediscovers the idea of the individual and the value of the individual outside of the collective group of “we”. Ayn Rand names Equality and Liberty, Prometheus and Gaea because they closely resemble these gods. In recognition of his discovery, Equality renames himself after Prometheus and his love, Liberty 5-3000, Gaea, after the epic Greek myths that both characters so strongly imitate. Equality has several understandable comparisons to Prometheus. According to Greek mythology, Prometheus brought fire to humanity, which lit his path and showed man the way to civilization. “He took the light of the gods and brought it to all men, and he taught men to be gods.” (Rand, Anthem p. 99). Additionally, Equality created a light bulb meant to change the light and power of his society. The Gift of Light of Equality was created to light the path of humanity and begin a period of invention and discovery, should it be accepted by the Council. “In the beginning, man was enslaved by the gods.” (Rand, Anthem p. 101). Another thing comparable between Equality and Prometheus was their incredible sacrifices made for their values. Before revolutionizing human technology with the gift of fire, Prometheus knew he would suffer, and yet he refused to sacrifice his ideals in the face of authority, for his actions, Prometheus was punished by Zeus for everything...... middle of paper ......Breaking equality and freedom, humanity is redeemed from its suffering under the "noble" ideal of communism. Their sacrifices and virtues overcame the education of their corrupt society and led them to the discovery of the most important part of the human spirit, individualism. The legends Prometheus and Gaea revolutionized the world for humanity and founded a new type of world with success and progress. Equality and freedom will find a society that potentially revolutionizes the world for humanity by celebrating the goodness of the individual human spirit, something that must be liberated, not held back and crushed by fear. Their discoveries put an end to corrupt preachings of selflessness and humility in favor of truly moral philosophies of freedom and, indeed, selfishness. These are the reasons why Ayn Rand named Equality, Prometheus and Liberty, Gaea..
