Who would suspect that something so crucial and beneficial, like education, could be detrimental to a society; the people of Kerala will soon find out. For as long as man can remember, Kerala has been a mass producer of coconuts. However, in recent years, as education began to creep into small-town India, coconut production declined significantly. Little do the people of Kerala know that despite their easier lifestyle, education would gradually lead to their own cultural and economic downfall. Along with their collapse, the entire world would also be affected economically. As beneficial as education can be, in some cases it could ruin the culture and economy of a society. It is inevitable that education is of paramount importance to the basic social well-being of a society. Especially today, in the 21st century, literacy plays a key role in each of our lives. Kerala, a mass coconut-producing Indian state, has caught up with this current educational trend and is now spreading it throughout its territory. But because of this educational boom, “the number of coconut pickers in Kerala has fallen dramatically over the past twenty years. Young adults tend to choose white-collar jobs. Scarcity of vines threatens Kerala's coconut industry” (Gable,1). Now, instead of choosing coconuts as a vocation, Kerala citizens have a greater choice in what job they actually want, making their lifestyle easier. However, even though education has a positive impact on the quality of life of the citizens of Kerala, it also requires the entire world to pay a heavy price in return. Due to the free education provided in Kerala, the coconut industry worldwide is in the middle of paper...we don't know how important each part of the coconut is. It is crucial for us to recognize that the people of Kerala are not the only humans who depend on the resources provided by coconuts. Instead, the rest of the world relies on products created by parts of the coconut, like its shell for rope or milk for lotion. These daily necessities would gradually disappear from our daily lives if education persists in Kerala. Slowly, as the number of coconut pickers in Kerala decreases, our global economy will face a new danger; inflation of all coconut products and say goodbye to the fruity pleasure that coconut offers. Not only this, but the society and culture of Kerala would also slowly deteriorate. It is undeniable that while education is beneficial to many, it can also lead to the downfall of a society's culture and economy..
