Community service and why it should be required for graduationEnglish 11B5th hourNichole Sleight3-31-14Have you ever wondered why you didn't get the job you wanted? How would you feel if you knew that a recent high school graduate got this job because they are more qualified than you? High school students who perform community service, required to graduate, are increasingly being certified for jobs as they gain all sorts of different experiences. By volunteering in local gardens, serving the elderly, and cleaning the streets, they can serve and give their time to the community. What is community service? The dictionary definition is: “Volunteer work, intended to serve the common good, usually carried out within the framework of an organized program. » ("Collins English Dictionary") People all over the country do community service for religious activities, Boy Scouts, and because that's what the judge ordered. Why not ask students to do this too, there is certainly no shortage of services. If someone wanted to become a dental hygienist after graduation, they could volunteer at the local dentist's office starting at the bottom, taking out the trash, and I work my way to the top and assist the hygenist. They could ask questions, get real-world experience, and shave off a few hours of service. This would help them update real-world knowledge that they wouldn't learn in class with a textbook. School alone can't help you with every situation you encounter later in life, service helps you develop skills and helps you help your community. Employers look for things like community service, computer technology and social skills when considering a job. RESUME. Having things like that means you have to... middle of paper...... inherit the business, or even clean the bus after a travel match. To benefit from these extra hours, simply ask your coach or a teacher to watch you do these things and sign your paper. Nothing like helping the school janitor. Some students leave trash at the table after lunch and leave it for the janitor to pick up. This takes a lot of time on their part and is not very pleasant on the part of the students. Some students, after their lunch, may go help the janitors, pick up the trash around the seats and wipe the crumbs off the table. Do this every day and your service hours can add up quickly and you won't have to worry about them later. Community service should be mandatory in every high school in America, for these reasons and many more. This would not only benefit students, but also employers, communities, seniors, neighbors, friends and parents..
