To begin with, there are countless reasons why they are considered similar. Atticus and Gandhi approached their problems in a non-violent manner. Both demonstrated maturity and self-control. Although things tend to get hectic and out of control, Mahatma and Atticus choose to be stern and fight with the pen rather than the sword. Additionally, both men were known to be very intelligent and astute. Every man has made wise progress in trying to benefit himself or those around him. This intelligence has often earned them respect and honor. Additionally, each of these men was supported in attempting their heroic actions. The African American community supported Atticus, while Gandhi was supported by his supporters and citizens willing to rebel against the government. Although these men are particularly similar, they differ in certain areas. For example, both men show courage for different reasons. Atticus defends unjust behavior towards African Americans and Gandhi fights for his country's independence. Additionally, they differ in the way they approach their actions. While Gandhi led protests in the streets and organized peaceful demonstrations, Atticus chose to defend an African American.
