    According to Ifemelu, there are two different types of black people in America, African Americans and African Americans. An African American is a black person, an African who immigrated to America and was not born in America. An African American is a black person whose ancestors were slaves born in America. African Americans were not as intelligent as an African American because education in America is very different from that in Nigeria. When Ifemelu was talking to Dike, Ifemelus' cousin, about what he learned at school. “She once asked Dike what he did at school before the summer, and he said, 'Circles.' They would sit on the floor in a circle and share their favorite things. She was dismayed. “Can you do division?” He looked at her strangely. “I’m only in my first year, Coz.” When I was your age, I knew how to do simple division. (Adiche 138). She was surprised to learn that he was only learning circles because in Nigeria, children did simple divisions. This suggests that education in Nigeria happens at an accelerated pace while in America, children learn at a very slow pace. In the United States, the school systems are different and much simpler than that of Nigeria, according to Ifemelu. She is surprised by the fact that American children get passes on their homework and take a long time to learn the important things they need to learn.
