  • Essay / Osmosis Test - 603

IntroductionAny type of molecule can pass through a completely permeable membrane, thus reaching equilibrium between two solutions with a completely permeable membrane. When a membrane is impermeable to larger molecules in solution, achieving equilibrium becomes a problem. In order to achieve this balance between solutions, another type of exchange must occur, this change is called osmosis. Osmosis is the net, simple diffusion movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane to achieve equilibrium (2). In other words, large molecules cannot pass through the semipermeable membrane, but water can, so it goes from high to low concentration across the membrane until the concentrations are the same on both sides of the membrane. Osmotic pressure, or the pressure that moves water from the highest concentration to the lowest concentration, dictates osmosis. Osmosis is important in daily life in many different ways, including but not limited to the functioning of the human body, food processing, and waste management (1).Materials and MethodsFirst, a 3-4 inch piece of dialysis tubing was acquired...
