Essay / The Hobbit - 1077
The Hobbit is written in the third person to make it seem like the story is being told out loud. In The Hobbit, the narrator speaks as if he were telling a story to children, often interrupting the story to make short asides. A quote to support this is on page 37 when Bert says, "You're a big fool William, as I already said this evening." Another quote from the book that proves it is written in the third person is when the dwarves shout, "Why what happened? Continue your story!" (Page 228). And finally when Bilbo asks, “There are no oars, how are you going to push the boat to the opposite shore?” (Page 144). My favorite part of the book would be when Smaug, the dragon, is killed. This is great because now travelers can get the treasure much easier. Even though Bilbo wasn't the one who killed Smaug, he was the one who provided the information needed to kill him. Bilbo found a weak spot on Smaug near his left breast. It was here that Bard, one of the archers defending the city and a descendant of Girion, shot Smaug with an arrow and was victorious. The arrow killed the fearsome beast. Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit, has changed a lot throughout the story. Initially, when he was recruited to go on a quest with the dwarves, he was a well-respected and quiet member of his community. He lived in his hole on the hillside and never thought about adventure. During his quest, every encounter he has with people, animals and beasts helps him become braver and more adventurous. After Smaug was killed, Bilbo returned to his house (the hole in the hill) which was being auctioned off because he was presumed dead. Having sorted out everything in this situation, he returned to being a quiet little hobbit who lived in a hole, thinking about his adventurous quest. One of the themes of The Hobbit is the use of power on many different levels. An example of a power would be Gandalf's magical powers which you see him use immediately. At the very beginning of the story, he places a mark on Bilbo's door which causes the dwarves to gather in the hobbit hole. Gandalf seems to know much more about Bilbo than can be explained, and he has a gift for prophecy..
