Essay / Tradition and Individual Talent - 1318
The essay “Tradition and Individual Talent” written by TS Elliot, illustrates for us the many reasons why poets should detach themselves from their writings and extract all the personal elements they wish to add to it. . When writing, it is difficult to create a work that contains elements of ancestors and previous poets. Elliot talks about the subject of "tradition" (2544) and how "it cannot be inherited" (2544) and that historical events must be emphasized as well as events occurring in the present in order to to create a piece of writing that is not a replica of one's own personality. Too often, poets are applauded for their work, based solely on the individual and original aspects they include, even if the credit goes to writers of the past. Elliot says: "Whereas if we approach a poet without this prejudice, we will often find that not only the best, but also the most individual parts of his work may be those in which the dead poets, his ancestors, most vigorously assert their immortality” (2544). He is right that by removing ourselves from writing, we can experience the power and emotion that is found in writing, rather than feeling like it comes directly from the poets and describes his life and his feelings. Poets should use the emotions they already experience, rather than trying to find new ones in order to “express feelings that are not real emotions at all” (2458). Elliot believes that a "bad poet" is "personal" when he is awake but should not be aware of it, and ignore when he should be awake. The emotions that one should use while writing are those that one remembers while being in a tranquil state of mind. When the mind experiences tranquility and the body is in a relaxing environment, this is when the po...... middle of paper ...... the reader for interpretation. Modernists wrote to let their readers “create values and meanings for themselves” (2113). Although many characteristics of the Romantic period, the Victorian era, and the modernist period are very different, the three pieces of poetry I have highlighted are all phenomenal in character. authors who follow the essay written by TS Elliot without ever reading it. This proves that Elliot is right in that a great writer must detach his personality and use his previous poets as a guide to writing poetry. The three poems I highlighted use the struggles of nature against society, even though each poem comes from a different time. Thus emphasizing the fact that each time period changed so significantly, writers began to detach their personalities and simply write the emotions of the times, while showcasing the only beauty they could find, nature..
