  • Essay / Fashion in the 60s and 70s - 1002

Fashion in the 60s and 70s The 60s were a period of growth in youth culture and fashion, which had already begun in the late 1960s 50. In the West, young people benefited from the post-war industrial boom and had no problem finding work. With more money in their pockets, they were able to spend more and had begun to remodel accordingly. This increased demand in the fashion industry has given rise to a new generation of designers. The freedom to earn extra money left room for more imagination and creativity, bringing forth new and provocative fashion ideas. Pop music began to take on a serious art form. Rock stars have influenced fashion like never before. The Beatles started the British Invasion with pop culture. They were fashion icons and many copied their long hair. Others copied the rebellious look of Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones). Rock stars started speaking up for the younger generation and the media was all over them. In the late sixties, pop music was the main force in fashion. In Europe and America, "underground" music played a big role, with magazines, festivals and underground bands in 1966-67. Drugs like marijuana and hallucinogens like LSD were more widely used outside of a small circle of musicians and artists. The sounds of blues, jazz, rock, electronica, Indian and classical have inspired psychedelic music. Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix were the leaders of this long hair, drugs and music scene. Other music such as be-bop jazz with beatniks, soul sounds from the Motown record company and folk for hippies also inspired fashion. In the early sixties, cocktails and beehives were "in", with the First Lady leading the way. John ... middle of paper ... and roller skating were all the rage, and designers quickly adopted practical and stylish new fashions for such activities. People were losing weight and the ideal woman had a slender figure. At the start of the decade, naturalness was in order and women were burning their bras. Leotards, gym bodywear and tracksuits have been styled for this decade of exercise and health. With riots and terrorism happening around the world, more aggressive and rebellious styles were being created. The punk look came with that; singers like Johnny Rotton and bands like The Ramones and the Sex Pistols were some to lead a new generation of teenagers. There was also the introduction of glam-rock in which musicians mixed glamor and rock. Davis Bowie had the most success. Fans copied his “rooster” haircut. He made the androgynous look popular.
