    To be fair, Oklahoma, especially Norman, is currently going through an artistic and cultural awakening, and it's not the worst place for the arts. However, support for the arts is simply not there. One of the issues I will explore is the fact that Norman is considered a college town. When someone thinks of Norman, they think of OU, and when they think of OU, most of the time, they think of football. This is understandable and predictable, since we are part of the Big 12 and have had a very successful season. That being said, it is clear that football has an economic impact in Oklahoma. According to the NCAA, OU football brings in approximately $129,226,692 per year. In comparison, arts and cultural organizations also impact the economy, generating approximately $314,776,098 in local economic activity annually (The Economic Impact of Nonprofit Arts and Cultural Organizations in Oklahoma). So this begs the question: if the arts have an impact on the economy almost three times greater than football, why are the arts not as important or as supported? This is where this generalization that the South is not very arts-friendly comes into play. For example, when someone thinks of New York, most of the time they think of Broadway or art galleries.
