A brother and sister relationship in The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee WilliamsIn the play "The Glass Menagerie", the characters and the relationships between them are very unique. Two unique characters who have a very strong relationship are brother Tom and sister Laura. Tom is a confused young man who supports his sister. Laura, her sister, has very low self-esteem and just sulks around the house all day. Their mother Amanda is absolutely crazy. She is obsessive and controlling towards her children, because she wants them to live the life she wanted to live. While Tom works hard to provide for his family and takes great care of Laura, he feels trapped and confused. After long days at work, Tom must return to the reality of his critical mother, his poor helpless sister and their little daughter. , cramped apartment. Tom feels a lot of resentment towards his father for abandoning the family. He escapes his feelings and emotions by going out all night to the “cinema” or the “bar”. There was never any real truth about where he went. When Tom is at home, he feels trapped, like he's in a cage and can't escape. Tom sometimes thinks he has to shoulder the burden of caring for his family, when he could be living his own life. He constantly argues with his mother, Amanda. She always has something to say, no matter what Tom does. In his heart, Tom truly cares about his sister. He wants her to be happy and live a good life. He knows she has potential, but he's afraid the world will reject her because of her disability. In his article about confinement in Tom's apartment, Eric P. Levy writes "Tom, the narrator and main character, the past when he began to 'boil inside' with the middle of paper.... ..when he left home, he couldn't forget his sister. He saw her everywhere he went, and everything reminded him that he was there to support her as a brother and help her get through it. Their bond was so special because they were both against their crazy, mid-life crisis mother. Tom realizes how important his sister is to him and how she affects his life he didn't have. No other choice than taking over the role when his father abandoned them Tom and Laura will always have a strong bond as brother and sister Laura means everything to Tom and he would never want anything bad to happen to her. he left home, Laura knows in her heart why he left and that it has nothing against her While Tom works hard to provide for his mother and sister, he feels trapped and. confused.
