  • Essay / The importance of phenotypes - 596

    6. In an environment that changes often or a species moves to a different environment, a genotype has the ability to produce various phenotypes to maintain the environment. The ability of the genotype to process different phenotypes depending on environmental pressures is called phenotypic plasticity. The phenotype can be rapid or progressive depending on the environment and the characteristics necessary for adaptation. An adaptive phenotype will be capable of modifying morphology, behavior and developmental alterations (Futuyma, 2013). Development may not be able to be reversed, but changes can happen quickly. An adaptive phenotype will be able to change its phenotype when the environment changes, resulting in different phenotypes adapting. Adaptive will increase the fitness of a species, as it will be able to quickly adapt to different environments, thereby increasing its chances of survival. A non-adaptive phenotype will decrease the fitness of a species. This phenotype can change the species to go against or resist changes in the environment or not adapt at all. If the species does not change...
