Movements, organizations, and individuals who use nonviolent strategies are praised and placed on higher moral ground. One possible reason why nonviolent strategies are respected is that they put the oppressive community at ease. However, anything that includes violence is automatically condemned. For example, the recent 2015 Baltimore “riot” attracted mainstream media attention. News channels continued to show the destruction of buildings in Baltimore, but made little reference to why protesters were angry — living conditions, police brutality, a failing education system and other disadvantages that have been happening for years. years – and wanted immediate change. In no way am I advocating violence, I am simply pointing out that violence, like the term white supremacy, is too powerful for the oppressive structure. This awareness leads marginalized people and their allies to use passive means and terms to gain the attention of the dominant group in hopes of eventually changing the oppressive regime.
