Essay / My Air Force Story - 883
I entered Squadron Officer School (SOS) on the first day of my training as an Air Force (AF) officer for six years, having served most of my time in Navy units. Both of my deployments were in the Navy and my leadership roles involved supervising Navy personnel. I quickly realized with humility that of all the SOS participants, I may actually have been the one with the least experience in AF. I look forward to taking this opportunity to get my blues back as I return to the Combat Air Force (CAF). I will use this article to explain how "my Air Force history," while very different from that of my classmates, fits into the puzzle that is AF history. I was born into a military family and have been embedded in military communities throughout my life. life. This was accompanied by overseas assignments, frequent travel and difficult deployments. Although I was sometimes unhappy with the family separation caused by my father's military service, I always knew that I, too, would join the military. After graduating from high school, I received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. I showed up to basic training with very limited knowledge of the Air Force mission and without thought about what my role would be in this unfamiliar service. During the fall of my sophomore year at the Academy, terrorists hijacked commercial planes loaded with passengers traveling with passengers. to see their families, friends and colleagues. Two of these planes destroyed the World Trade Center buildings in New York. A third plane was directed toward the north side of the Pentagon in northern Virginia. In the confusion that surrounded that morning, the only thing that was clear to me was that my father was working on the innermost ring on the north side of the Pentagon. My family, my middle of paper, my environment, and the situation as a whole have grown immensely throughout this mission, but I realize that I still retain a relatively narrow scope in the grand scheme of the war. Likewise, I have a relatively limited understanding of all Air Force assets and resources. As my time flying with the Navy comes to an end, I look forward to the exposure I will continue to gain during my time at SOS and learning what my classmates bring to the fight. In this essay, I explained how “My Air Force Story” fits into AF history. I hope my perspective and experiences will help those around me better understand my community and what they bring to the fight. Likewise, each of my classmates has their own story that I look forward to hearing and integrating into my own growing understanding of AF and joint operations..
