  • Essay / The Jungle by Upton Sinclair - 1846

The Jungle, written by Upton Sinclair, was a very touching and motivating story. Sinclair aimed for our hearts, but instead he hit our bellies. The Jungle is a story of hardship and problems, some successes and many failures as a family attempts to achieve the "American Dream." In this book, "the myth of Jurgis Ruckus's failure is the other side of the myth of Horatio Alger's success." (xxvi) Although this book was written about a family's struggles, it was not only a story to read and feel sympathy for the family, but there were many "real" reasons behind the events that happened and happened. . Sinclair wanted to open people's eyes and make them aware of what was happening and ultimately he wanted to start a revolution to change the political system from capitalism to socialism. The period was approximately 1905-06. Immigrants, like Jurgis and his family, came to America hoping to create a new life and live the “American Dream.” They didn’t know what they were facing and how difficult this “American dream” life was. Families came looking for a new life, a decent job, saving money, living in a big house, having food on the table and yet many things stopped them from achieving this. According to Horatio Alger, the “American Dream” was the dream of going from rags to riches. This could only be achieved with a lot of hard work, motivation and self-determination, and in the end, Algiers' theory of the "American Dream" was proven wrong, as demonstrated in many ways. The life of Jurgis and his family shows in many ways how difficult it was to achieve the "American dream". Scores of immigrant families flocked to America and the first thing they did was try to find work; only, it was...... middle of paper...... satisfaction guaranteed thanks to the FDA. It must be inspected and approved by them. And also, on everything we buy as consumers, we can read what is in the product thanks to the label; the FDA requires that every ingredient be listed. Along with the FDA was the Meat Inspection Act of 1906. This strained and forced slaughterhouses to clean up. Sanitation became a major problem and slaughterhouses were inspected for cleanliness. Additionally, each animal carcass must be inspected and pass inspection before it can be processed and used further; it had to be cleared of infections and diseases. These changes did not happen overnight. It took time, and even today it continues to improve every year. The structure of government has changed and improved every year to protect and satisfy the common good of the people..
