Technology is the means that extends human capabilities. It is very difficult to obtain a precise definition of technology. It is generally accepted that “technology” is more than just a set of physical scientific products. “Technology” is the link between society and its tools. The creation of computer software and hardware, telecommunications, databases, and the Internet have affected society as a whole, and higher education in particular, by providing individuals with new productivity options and changing the way they work . (Hulbert, 1998). In what is known as the “information age,” the increasing use of technology has become the driving force behind how people work, learn, and play (Drake, 2000). As this force evolves, so do the users of the technology (Nelson, 1990). Adapting to technology is not easy. Some people tend to accept change while others resist it (Wolski & Jackson, 1999). As a result, higher education stakeholders must find ways to adapt to technological changes. Administrators, faculty, academic librarians, and students should define the role of technology for the purposes of (1) sharing new ideas and techniques for teaching and learning; (2) encourage enthusiasm and innovation; and (3) knowing the opportunities and challenges, and how to manage them (Landsberger, 2001). Since technology skills are an important part of most library and information jobs, librarians must ensure that they are continually learning technology skills. Academic libraries should employ information and technology specialists and trained troubleshooters to maximize system accessibility and provide a level of comfort for librarians. A positive attitude toward computers and sound coping management strategies will alleviate and benefit from technological stress. If these recommendations are followed, librarians in academic libraries will look forward to working in a technologically stress-free environment...
