Essay / Analysis of Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson as an example of a film Bildungsroman
Genre is the classification of arts, music, literature or cinema into different categories based on the codes and conventions they follow. A film's genre often tells audiences the type of film and the general emotional response to expect. Genre consists of certain elements, such as characters, story, plot, and setting; which are used to determine the class of the film. Filmmakers and directors choose a genre for the film to find a potential audience as quickly as possible to increase overall sales. Some common genres include comedy, action, horror, science fiction, romance, and many others. These genres often intersect, as a film usually falls into multiple categories, such as romantic comedies or sci-fi thrillers. Many of these genres are very broad, such as comedy, which is divided into many different forms of comedy, such as slapstick, satire, or farce. Filmmakers also have different intentions for some films versus others. For example, science fiction films are extremely popular all over the world but are rarely in the running for awards (e.g. Avengers: Endgame). Avengers: Endgame is the most watched film of all time, but it probably won't win an Oscar. Instead, the awards generally recognize well-crafted melodramatic films like Dunkirk (2018). The objective of these films is the physical and moral growth of the main character(s) over the course of the film. Most of the time, the character transitions from youth to adulthood, literally or mentally. Each Bildungsroman film has a set structure that they generally adhere to. At the beginning of the films, the characters already feel like the world is neither a happy nor safe place. Usually this is due to an event that happened before the story begins, which is then revealed in the film. Once the character is introduced, an event will occur that will make his life even more difficult, motivating him to pursue his goals. It is the pursuit of these goals that character transformation occurs. During this journey, the character will realize that he no longer has the support he once had and is now alone in the world. This realization gives the main character the courage to face his problems rather than shy away from them. An example of a Bildungsroman film is the 2012 Wes Anderson film Moonrise Kingdom. The story is about a young orphan named Sam Shakusky, who was sent to Camp Ivanhoe by his adoptive parents. He doesn't feel like he has a specific role or place in the world until he meets a young girl named Suzy. She's another introvert who feels out of place in her family. The plot of the film is the elopement together that they had previously imagined through handwritten letters. It is during this journey that the two experience their transition from youth to adulthood. Moonrise Kingdom follows almost all of the necessary conventions of the Bildungsroman. For example, at the beginning of the film, Sam and Suzy are innocent and pure, although unhappy with the current world they live in. They are not enjoying their lives as they are, both unhappy with the state of their family. They finally decide that they cannot..
