Essay / The Effects of Underage Drinking - 869
Every year, thousands of minors die due to alcohol consumption. Many young adults abuse the drinking age policy. It is implemented for substantial reasons, which help create the safest environment for everyone. Drinking under the legal age is not only illegal, but is also extremely harmful to your health. Additionally, drinking in large quantities is extremely dangerous and can cause adverse effects. There have been many attempts to create a law to lower the drinking age, but none have been successful. Contrary to what some might say, the drinking age should not be lowered as this would diminish maturity, encourage bad behavior and damage reputation. If the legal drinking age were lowered, people's maturity would decrease. Various sources state that "[the minimum legal drinking age] should remain at 21 because people tend to be more mature and responsible at 21 than at 18" (ProCon.org). At twenty-one, we have experienced more life situations than at eighteen, which makes the twenty-one year old a more responsible human being. There is also evidence that “increasing the drinking age has apparently increased the responsibility of young people. Compared to 1980, when under 21 was the norm, fewer students in 1995 reported drinking in the past month (68% vs. 82%) and binge drinking (39% vs. 44%)” (Egendorf 110). Younger adults tend to be less mature when it comes to drinking than older adults. Additionally, if the drinking age was lowered, people would drink irresponsibly. When adolescents are intoxicated, the results can lead to immaturity and unfamiliarity with their surroundings. Therefore, they create harm towards others. Being drunk stops people's brains from functioning normally and impacts their activities, as well as other irresponsible behaviors due to immaturity. (ProCon.org). Lowering the drinking age leads to a lack of maturity in young adults. So, lack of maturity makes people commit bad acts that change their lives forever. If the drinking age were to decrease, it would diminish the maturity of young adults, influence poor decisions that lead to injury, and harm its reputation. 18 year olds can't handle the legal privilege of being able to drink. This is a huge responsibility that young adults are not capable of handling. Setting the drinking age at 21 would reduce the number of drunk driving accidents and represent a strong case to America for responsible drinking. Overall, alcohol consumption can take many forms, but keeping the legal drinking age at 21 would impact safer and responsible drinking..
