Essay / Discrimination against men - 1363
Discrimination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, in particular on grounds of race, age or sex. In today's society, men face discrimination through the media, suffer discrimination in parental custody, face discrimination in courtrooms and even in their choice of career. BBC journalist David Benatar said that "the second sexism is that men everywhere are more likely to be drafted into the army, to be victims of violence, to lose custody of their children and commit suicide” (Castella, 2012). Even the way men are portrayed on television and in movies plays a significant role in how they are treated in real-life situations. The most common and subtle form of discrimination that men face are stereotyping in the media. In the media, men are portrayed as aggressive and angry athletes, businessmen with no morals, and lazy and terrible fathers. When men are portrayed in such a negative way in front of people's eyes, the way all men are viewed and treated is also going to be negatively affected. When all people see of men are dynamic, aggressive people who "compromise their own long-term health to fight when necessary" (Children Now, 1999), it begins to distort the image of men. . This portrayal gives the impression that men are creatures who only care about showing off their strength and avoiding appearing feminine at all costs. Some “admirable” portrayals of men in the media can also be a bit destructive. Most films and television shows feature a big businessman who is "the epitome of success, embodying the characteristics and acquiring the goods that society considers valuable" (Children Now, 1999). This portrait of me...... in the middle of paper ......This statistic further reinforces the belief that men should not or cannot teach young children. Men still shy away from jobs that are considered “feminine,” mainly because the media still makes it seem like they are. fewer men if they choose predominantly female careers. In conclusion, male discrimination has become a very subtle but more prevalent element in today's society, and it does not receive the attention it deserves. People need to understand that men's rights. need as much attention as women. Men are portrayed terribly in the media, are unable to gain custody of their children, are treated unfairly by the current justice system, and are sometimes even mocked for their career choices. If gender equality is to be achieved, male discrimination must be taken as seriously as sexism against women..
